FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

03-01-10 850AM

On Thursday, March 4, Discovery Bay and Byron teachers, parents, staff and community members will participate in Start the Day for Students, a statewide event designed to unite and raise public awareness about the dismal state of education funding in California. Start the Day for Students is sponsored by the Stand Up for Schools Initiative of California Teachers Association.

Members of the school community will be wearing pink clothing, schools will hang pink banners, and volunteers will be handing out pink flyers and letters to state legislators in front of each of the three district schools: Excelsior, Timber Point and Discovery Bay.

Chairs will be placed in front of the schools representing those whose jobs will be affected by the current proposed budget cuts. The volunteers helping to organize the effort are calling themselves Save Our Schools, as the latest budget cuts take a shoestring budget down to a thread. Residents are encouraged to express their support by writing letters to legislators.
