Deer Valley produced the winning athlete in 11 of the 16 events. Chizoba Okodogbe and Erica Wilson each won three races. Okodogbe won the 200 meters with a time of 24.39 seconds, more than a second ahead of her nearest competitor, the 400 meters by more than three seconds, and anchored her winning 4x100-meter relay teammates Jamela Kemp, Darnella Jenkins and Audrena Harlan.
Wilson won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and Kemp finished as runner-up in both races. Wilson also ran the lead-off leg in the 4x400-meter relay, which she won along with Najae Jones, Jamira Cox and Jenkins. Kemp was also a runner-up to Khyia Slone of Heritage in the triple jump. In addition to running on both victorious relay teams, Jenkins won the long jump and finished second to Okodogbe in the 200.
The closest race of the day was the girls 100 meters, which was won by Harlan. A mere three-hundredths of a second separated her and the third-place finisher.
The winners of the other girls events were: 800 meters – Jones (DV); 1,600 meters – Marcie Torres (Pittsburg); 3,200 meters – Kendall Kawalkowski (Freedom); high jump – Cox (DV); pole vault – Michelle Fancey (Liberty); shot put – Chantel Taito (DV); and discus – Tatjana Pitts (Antioch).
The Heritage boys took a different route to success than the Deer Valley girls, placing the winning athlete in only four of the 16 events and finishing third in both of the relays. But they had greater breadth, finishing high in most of the events.
The Patriot boys’ best event was the 800 meters, where they finished in the top three. Jacob Bradley won with a time of 2:01.86. Brandon Brum and Eric Morford were right behind with scores of 2:02.46 and 2:02.34. In the 400-meter race, Joseph Luiz and Steven McIntosh of Heritage sandwiched Sebastine Kollie of Deer Valley in the top three.
The Freedom quartet of Timazray Shepherd, Darrell Daniels, Josh Garcia and Kenneth Walker won the 4x100 relay. Deer Valley’s Nick Lewis, Thomas Taylor, Kollie and Joey Johnson comprised the winning 4x400 relay team.
Freedom’s Walker won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Antioch’s Evan Grimes also starred in the meet, winning both the long jump and the triple jump. The other boys event winners were: 100 meter – Shepherd (Freedom); 200 meter – Shamawn Wright (Antioch); 1,600 meter – Jesus Morales (Liberty); 3,200 meter – Paul Matejcek (DV); high jump – Billy Eng (Heritage); pole vault – Michael DiGiorgio (Liberty); shot put – Willie Ward (Pittsburg); and discus – Alex Horncliff (Heritage).
