The Town of Discovery Bay is hosting a special town meeting this Monday, June 21, to discuss the possible closure of two East County fire stations. The public forum begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Discovery Bay Elementary School gymnasium.

Acting Chief Hugh Henderson of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) and Discovery Bay's Chris Finetti, ECCFPD board member, will speak about the fire district’s budget issues and answer questions concerning the ECCFPD board’s possible closure of two of the district’s eight fire stations. Station 58 on Discovery Bay Boulevard and Station 57 in Byron, as well as Station 95 in Bethel Island, are under consideration for closure.

The ECCFPD is expected to vote on the closures on June 29 at a special meeting to adopt next year's budget. Station closures could come as soon as mid-July.

“The primary reason for this special meeting is to let the public know what is going on with the proposed closures and how it could affect this community," said Finetti. “Where we are as a (fire) district is not great news, but as a commissioner representing the unincorporated areas, I believe the public has a right to know what is going on.”

Discovery Bay Elementary School is located at 1700 Willow Lake Road.

The special ECCFPD meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on June 29 at Oakley's City Hall, 3231 Main Street.
