Team Select National won the junior varsity level tournament, despite being younger than every team it played. The National team is comprised largely of incoming high school freshmen, and played against teams fielding mostly sophomores and juniors next season. Led by Team Select organizer Ruben Garcia, the Nationals defeated DBC, an Oakland-based team, 64-44. Along the way they also took care of the Berkeley Magic and Beast Up, a select Benicia team.
The National team is made of athletes who will be attending schools in the Bay Valley Athletic League next season. They were led throughout the weekend by Elliott Smith (14 rebounds, five assists), Stephen Roxas and Ben Juarez (six rebounds, six assists).
The Team Select tournaments are dedicated to helping save freshmen sports in the Liberty Union High School District, as half of all the revenue generated from tickets purchased by those holding a Save Freshmen Sports ticket goes to the Education Foundation fund for that specific goal. Another tournament will be held in July.
