If you’re thinking of drinking and driving in Oakley – don’t. Of the 60 officers in Contra Costa County who were honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, California Office of Traffic Safety and the Contra Costa County Avoid the 25 program this week for arresting multiple drunk drivers in 2009, Oakley placed three in the top five.

In fact, Oakley officers Lance Morrison, Mark Johnson and Curtis Berkely were ranked one through three in DUI arrests last year. Morrison arrested 212 impaired drivers, while Johnson arrested 60 and Berkely 52.

“Kudos to all of the officers and deputies who make our roads safer,” said Contra Costa Sheriff Warren E. Rupf. “Special recognition goes to Officer Lance Morrison of the Oakley Police Department. His 212 DUI arrests came while working as a beat officer, where he made numerous other arrests. His proactive efforts have improved safety and the quality of life for the citizens of Oakley.”

The Avoid the 25 program is a countywide anti-DUI campaign marshaling all 25 law enforcement agencies in Contra Costa. The focus is on enforcement and education. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
