Antioch High girls varsity golf head coach John Luis admits to doing some double dipping.

Also the Panthers’ softball coach, Luis supervises a golf team peppered with athletes from the diamond. So far this season, the team looks improved and ready to move up in the standings. “They’ve just been more consistent in their scores,” Luis said. “They’ve played three years and every year improved. They’re not as intimidated.”

Antioch is off to a 3-2 start following a 277-293 win last Thursday over Freedom. Luis points to athletes such as senior top golfer Kelsey Cast, a first baseman and pitcher for the Panthers softball team, and No. 2 golfer Nicollette Redfearn, a junior and utility player in the spring, as two reasons for the team’s success. Last season, six Panther softball players pulled double duty.

Antioch placed fifth in the six-team Bay Valley Athletic League last year, and Luis believes this season’s team could move up to third behind teams such as Deer Valley and Liberty. As four of his eight players are seniors, Luis said this year could be the team’s best chance to compete in the BVAL.

The Panthers need to get better at the short game, the coach said, in order to solidify their standing: “They’re athletic, so they should be able to adjust to play decent golf.”
