Pioneer Elementary School students spelled their way to $2,300 last week during the school’s annual spelling bee, which raised funds for the hiring of a lunchtime supervisor.

Third- through fifth-graders tackled a list of 50 words, and sponsors offered pledges for every word spelled. First-place winners and runners-up received a trophy and a gift card for their accomplishments.

This year’s winners, from left (with Principal Rusty Elrich), are Zachary Pakin (fourth-grade runner-up), Allison Kim (third-grade runner-up) Sierra Hinds (fourth-grade winner), Alex Emery (third-grade winner) Connor Robles (fifth-grader winner) and Tiffany Austudillo (fifth-grade runner-up).
