Siblings Mezhggan Aryen, Nazanin “Naz” Fazil and Abudullah Fazil all shared the same dream: to work together and own a restaurant. While they all had extensive experience in the food and hospitality industries, between their busy lives and careers they never found the right opportunity to pursue that dream.

The moment materialized when Mezhgan found herself laid off due to the shaky economy. During a trip back home to Afghanistan, she convinced the family elders to share their secret family recipes, which she brought back to share with her siblings. Inspired by these generations-old delights, they set out to make their dream a reality, leaving their corporate careers behind to open the restaurant.

In June, their dream came true when Chaman Kabob opened on Lone Tree Way in Brentwood. Their mission: to offer “fresh food, fresh ingredients, old family recipes and outstanding customer service.”

From their bread to their kabobs – which marinate for more than 24 hours in the secret blend of seasonings – everything is made from scratch every day, and service is dedicated to treating diners as part of the extended family.

The trio is delighted that customers love Chaman Kabob’s Afghan cuisine, despite its unfamiliarity. Customer favorites include the chicken kabob – juicy marinated chicken served over a bed of seasoned rice and accompanied by an Afghan salad, bread and Chaman chutney. While the eatery specializes in kabobs, it also offers a variety of vegetarian dishes, including boloni kacholoo, a potato- and herb-stuffed turnover.

While Mezhgan, Naz and Abdullah do a bit of everything, each contributes a distinct foodservice specialty. In addition to running the overall operation, Naz works the front of house. Abdullah is the chef and the keeper of the family recipes while Mezhgan is the quality checker, making sure everything is made to the family’s high standards. Augmenting the family flair are two other brothers and the trio’s mother, who help on occasion.

Since its soft opening in June, Chaman Kabob’s diners have responded with enthusiasm. “Customers come in and love the food!” said Naz. To celebrate its official grand opening, the restaurant will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday, Aug. 23 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event will feature food samples and door prizes. And look for Chaman Kabob’s booth at the Brentwood Art, Wine & Jazz Festival on Aug. 25.

It’s been a busy few months, but the family is loving it. “It feels good to live your dream,” said Mezghan.

“Sometimes I joke that we should be on a reality show,” laughed Naz. “We have a lot of fun together.”

Chaman Kabob, located at 5611 Lone Tree Way, Suite 120 in Brentwood, is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The phone number is 925-634-1454 and the website is www.chamankabob.com. Chaman Kabob also offers catering for weddings, special events and corporate events.
