Proprietors Anthony and Alyssa Roost (front and center) and the staff at Brentwood’s Vine + Grain offer more than the typical wine bar. Guests can cozy up on couches gathered around a fire pit on Vine + Grain’s outdoor patio, while they enjoy wine, craft beer and delectable small plates.

With its high-quality, farm-to-fork small plates, modern and rustic décor and selection of craft beers and wine, Vine + Grain has brought a much-welcome vibe to Brentwood’s wine bar scene. 

Proprietors Anthony and Alyssa Roost, the Discovery Bay husband-and-wife-team who opened UnWined in Discovery Bay in 2014, were approached by The Streets of Brentwood’s management team to open a second wine bar before they got their first business off the ground.

“We hadn’t even opened the doors to UnWined yet when we were asked to consider a second location in The Streets of Brentwood,” said Alyssa.

When the Roosts began their second endeavor, Vine + Grain, they chose a similar concept to UnWined, but on a larger scale. They hired Executive Chef Daniel Schrock, who attended the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont.

“We wanted to raise the bar here in Brentwood, so people wouldn’t have to leave town to enjoy an authentic night out or eat farm-to-fork in a community that is so rich in agriculture,” said Anthony.

The flavors that Schrock coaxes out of Vine + Grain’s kitchen carries so much richness and depth, patrons would never guess the chef works in a small 12-by-12 ft. space.

“My culinary experience is based on farm-to-fork, and bringing that to Brentwood is important,” said Schrock, who shops for produce at local farms and creates rotating menus based on what’s growing in the community.

Schrock’s current menu features savory dishes, including a crab melt with garlic truffle and avocado and braised chicken tacos with smoked Gouda, pickled onions, light barbecue sauce and jalapeño cilantro crème. The dishes are beautifully plated and pair well with the bar’s craft beer and wine selection.

“The atmosphere is great and the food is the best,” said Brentwood resident Felicia Kilbane, who tried Vine + Grain’s bruschetta, with homemade balsamic and a cheese and charcuterie plate. “We really enjoy going and love the staff.”

Just as you’d expect, Vine + Grain offers a lot of wine. There are nearly three dozen wines by the glass and bottle, plus two by the bottle only. Prices for a glass start at $7.50 for a lovely Villa Rosa Moscato and top out at $26 for a glass of Bardessono Vineyards’ Cabernet. The list showcases Northern California, but also draws from all over the world, including Argentina, France and Italy. Vine + Grain’s craft-beer menu consists of 12 rotating, craft-beer selections.

Events and specials include live music every Wednesday night from 6 to 9 p.m.; industry and teacher Thursdays, where all service industry and teachers receive 10 percent off of their bill; and happy hour Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 1 to 7 p.m. and all day on Sundays.

While Vine + Grain has sparked the attention of foodies and wine and beer enthusiasts all over the Bay Area, the Roost family is just getting started with their family establishments. Their next endeavor is to open a small, farm-to-table restaurant, which will feature a rotating menu to broaden people’s culinary palates. The Roosts are hoping to open their restaurant in 2017.

Vine + Grain is located at 2475 Sand Creek Road, Suite 112, in Brentwood and is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 1 to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 7 p.m.
