A local watering hole in Discovery Bay has recently undergone a change in name and ownership.
Formerly known as UnWined, Back Roads is the new name of the local hot spot for California wines, craft beer and cheese. New owner Amber Tennant looks forward to continuing the traditions begun by previous owners.
“Not a lot will be changing in the aesthetics, but we will be (editing) the wine list,” Tennant said. “There are a lot of wines from all over the country right now, and it’s important to me to bring California into the bar. We are also going to get more local, craft beers on tap.”
Tennant comes to her new business with a passion for viticulture. She spent time managing a winery tasting room, and she looks forward to bringing her knowledge to her patrons. What they won’t be changing are the locally famous grilled cheese sandwiches.
“Our specialty grilled cheeses have always been popular, and we will continue with those, rotating every two weeks,” said Tennant. “We also have quesadillas, some ‘small bites’ and meat and cheese boards. Beginning May 21, we will be open on Sundays, and we will add a mimosa bar and brunch items to the menu.”
In addition to refining the wine list and keeping the menu on point, Tennant wants to have a full event calendar for local residents. Her plans include paint night, dream-catcher-making night, make-your-own succulent parties, live music and pop-up boutiques. All sign-ups are available on the Back Roads website.
Tennant’s roots go deep in East County. After growing up in Discovery Bay, she married fourth-generation walnut farmer Jason Tennant. The couple now lives in unincorporated Brentwood, near the Discovery Bay border. Tennant has owned a business in the area before, so when the opportunity to purchase a wine bar came up, it was a natural next step.
So far, it appears to have been the right one; online reviewers have raved about girls’ night out, quiet dinners and the delicious food. Discovery Bay resident Peggy Piedade recently enjoyed an afternoon sipping wine and playing cards with her friends.
“We had a great time,” Piedade said. “Great service, appetizers were great and they had games to play. (We played) a killer game of Uno. Great atmosphere.”
Others have complimented the service, the new patio décor and Tennant’s engagement with her customers.
“We went there for my birthday and had a blast,” said Carla Neisser, also of Discovery Bay. “Super great staff that checked in on us all night, without being obnoxious. The owner was very knowledgeable about the wines and vineyards. I loved the selections, and everyone in our group (was able to) get something different to match our tastes. The meat and cheese tray was unique and huge, and the grilled cheese sandwiches were to die for.”
Tennant hopes customers will continue to find something to please their palates, whether it’s a glass of wine and conversation or one of the many events on her calendar.
“It’s important to me to keep running a place where people can come relax and have fun,” Tennant said. “I think the previous owners did a great job setting that up, and I just hope to continue.”
