Bark in the Park

Anthony Hailey and his chocolate Labrador retriever, Bosco, pose for a photo during the Bark in the Park event in Brentwood, Saturday, May 18.

Drawing wagging tails from across the city, the annual Bark in the Park event escaped the weekend downpours and brought together dogs, their owners, the police department canine detail and a variety of vendors.

Sparked by Mayor Bob Taylor and coordinated by JoAnn Klement, the chairperson for the Brentwood Neighborhood Committee, the pooch parade was a couple of hours for people to just smile and have some fun, according to the mayor. Taylor said in an interview that the idea was inspired by a similar event he once attended in Twain Harte. Told about the event while visiting his vacation home in Mi-Wuk, he said it hosted every mutt known to man, and he thought it would be a good idea to bring to his hometown.

“At first, I thought we might bring a few dogs in, but it turned out to be very popular,” Taylor added. “I was impressed with the attendance and all the vendors.”

The mayor brought a stuffed dog, Rufus, to the festivities and was impressed by the city’s police canine officers.

“Wow, they put on quite a show,” he said.

Klement estimated some 300 people attended the Saturday event, now in its seventh year.

“We were so happy to welcome back VFW Post 10789 and the Marine Corps League 1155 to present the colors,” said Klement. “They have been a supporter of Bark in the Park every year.”

Kim Giuliano, a member of the Brentwood Neighborhood Committee, volunteered to provide face painting, which was very popular. Menchies Yogurt came for the first time and gave away basic yogurt for the dogs and served treats to the human attendees.

Klement said the donation of a jumper inflatable by Got-a-Party party rentals contributed to some fun for the children attending. She also thanked the long list of contributors to the event that included the Brentwood Police Department, Furry Friends Pet Relief, Purrfect Pets Magazine, East Contra Costa Fire Department, Pet Food Express, Holly’s Kitchen, Dignity Memorial, Walking the Dog Pet Services, Wagging Tails Training, Banfield Pet Hospital, Tony LaRussa Animal Rescue Foundation, Shear Canine, PetSmart, Fairview Animal Hospital and H.A.L.O.
