There weren’t many female dentists when Dr. Maryam E. Khakpour began practicing in 1989.

Since then, the dentist, who works at Lone Tree Dental in Brentwood, has become a leader in a predominantly male field, proving that women can be successful in business while raising a family.

As a young girl, Khakpour knew that she wanted to be a dentist after she had a tooth pulled when it could have been saved. She wasn’t even given the option to save the tooth and always regretted having it removed.

Once she decided to study dentistry, Khakpour had no reservations about paving her way through a field comprised of mostly men.

“I knew I could do it,” she said.

After graduating from the prestigious Shiraz University of Medical Sciences School of Dentistry in Iran, Khakpour spent 10 years practicing dentistry there, before moving to the U.S., where she continued her practice. The skepticism that met her in the beginning of Khakpour’s career soon subsided, as her patients were impressed not only with her skills and expertise, but also by her compassion.

“I am very passionate that people shouldn’t be in pain,” she said.

The combination of expertise and compassion has had a tremendous effect on her patients.

“Dr. K has a heart of gold and is very caring, knowledgeable and conscientious,” said Antioch resident Susan Keith, who has been with Khakpour for six years. “She does excellent work.”

Lone Tree Dental offers a variety of dental services including dental hygiene, sedation dentistry, endodontics, restorative, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, oral surgery and orthodontics. Khakpour is also one of very few doctors who are credentialed by the Dental Oral Sedation Academy.

Besides managing an active dental practice, Khakpour and her husband have also raised two children.

“I love my family and am so thankful for my husband, who has always been so supportive of me,” said Khakpour.

While there have been many strides taken by female dentists like Khakpour, the field is still male-oriented. According to the American Dental Association, women comprise only 19 percent of U.S. dentists.

“I feel so special to be one of those women in the 19 percent, and I believe women are very good at dentistry,” said Khakpour.

Lone Tree Dental is located at 5421 Lone Tree Way, Suite 110, in Brentwood.
