A pit bull mix named Peaches is inspiring animal lovers to give this season - $1 at a time.
This permanent resident of Antioch Animal Services is the focus of a holiday fundraiser seeking to engage donors of all ages in support of the facility, which received 3,054 cats and dogs last year for rescue and, in most cases, adoption.
Peaches, who was born at the shelter in 2008, is a goodwill ambassador for the center.
“She has her own site on Facebook – ‘Peaches of Antioch,’” said Ali Curran, an Oakley resident who began volunteering at the center in July of this year.
Volunteers at the adoption center also provide Peaches with an annual birthday party.
“It’s so exciting to see so many children and adults interested in helping our animals,” Curran added.
Her idea for a fund drive, Cards for Peaches, encourages folks to send a holiday card with a donation of $1 (or more) to the center. All cards postmarked by Dec. 24 will be entered in a drawing, with one winner getting a Peaches item – a shirt, water bottle or other promotional item. The winner will be announced during the first week of January.
“It’s a good way to teach children about donating,” Curran said of the holiday drive.
Cards will be displayed at the Antioch location and children are encouraged to send a drawing or printed card with their donation. The cards will be displayed at the center and the donations will support the center’s efforts to offer low-cost spay and neuter expenses.
Curran was motivated to volunteer at the center because of her love of animals.
“I wanted to help out,” she said. “I hope I’m making a difference in their lives.”
The mother of two, Curran has two dogs and fish, a parakeet and hermit crabs. She made the video that appears on the center’s Facebook site.
Peaches’ celebrity status is bolstered by her featured animal picks of the month, just one of the center’s efforts to promote adoption of the dogs and cats.
The mailing address for the holiday raffle is Antioch Animal Services, 300 L St., Antioch, 94509.
