Whether it’s for swelling, inflammation, or a longstanding injury, a common form of pain management has been through using a frozen ice pack, or the uncomfortable process of sitting in a bathtub filled to the brim with ice cubes.
But now, with the accessibility of services like cryotherapy, East County residents can go to the professionals at Cryo4Life in Oakley, to get help with a unique form of pain management.
Cryo4Life is a holistic medicinal spa owned and run by cryotherapy expert Gerald Olivas, who opened the business in 2021, with the goal of making cryotherapy approachable and affordable.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, cryotherapy is the cooling of the body at low temperatures. Common forms of cryotherapy are the use of ice packs to reduce inflammation on specific parts of the body, or for injuries. Another form is Whole Body Cryotherapy, which includes exposing the body to “ultra-low temperatures,” with liquid nitrogen, typically between negative 200 to negative 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Olivas says that cryotherapy is often done through a cold tank, known as the CryoSauna, that cools the whole body. “What happens is that you go into a cold tank that gets to negative 220, and you use liquid nitrogen, and it helps with pain and inflammation,” Olivas said. “It reduces inflammation, swelling and pain – especially around the joints or tendons.”
Regular cryotherapy can also stimulate collagen production, help with the appearance of acne, rejuvenate and tighten skin, along with many other benefits, according to the Cryo4Life website.
Olivas also says that establishing a cryotherapy regimen will give you the best results in the long run with the reduction of inflammation. “Everyone is different, but longterm it really helps to reduce your pain and inflammation.” he said. “Several sessions of cryotherapy is important in establishing a good regimen because your body is going to start to understand what you are doing to it. It’ll help filter out a lot of fluids, help regenerate cells, and overall help clean out your system.”
