An exterior fire spread to two homes on the 600 block of Country Lane in Oakley, causing extensive damage to both structures Tuesday, June 3.

“Today we got a call, a report of an exterior fire that impacted the fence line between two homes,” said ECCFPD Fire Marshal Steve Aubert. “That fire quickly grew and actually impacted both of those two-story single-family residential homes.”

That fire was reported at 4:25 p.m., and Aubert said residents tried to extinguish the flames on their own before fire crews arrived, but it quickly grew out of their control.

When the call was received, most East County firefighting resources were committed to a commercial fire on Lone Tree Way in Brentwood that had been reported at 4:10 p.m. Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Engines 88 and 82 were diverted from that incident to Oakley and they were first to arrive on scene and begin the fire attack. The Lone Tree Way incident was resolved quickly and those resources were dispatched to the Country Lane fire.

“That fire was actually a piece of equipment that had been put away and stored improperly,” said Aubert explaining the incident on Lone Tree Way. “That was a quick identification of what the cause of that fire was. It did provide a delayed response to get here.”

No injuries to the residents or firefighters were reported during the incident. Both families were displaced from their homes, which suffered fire, smoke and water damage. Aubert said the cause of the fire is under investigation, though he does believe the fire’s origin was accidental.
