All occupants evacuated safely, after a residential fire broke out on the 100 block of E. Ruby Street, Oakley, Calif., Sunday, October 3, 2021. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A two-story home was destroyed in a fire Sunday morning in Oakley.

The fire broke out shortly before 10:15 on East Ruby Street in Oakley.

All human occupants of the home safely evacuated the structure, but crews had to rescue a trapped dog.

The dog, which required on-scene supplemental oxygen, was transported to a local pet hospital, but was reported to be recovering, said Steve Aubert, fire marshal with East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.

Firefighting efforts were complicated by overhead power lines which prevented the use of ladder trucks, Aubert said. The home’s basement, deemed at risk of collapse, also posed a danger to firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Aubert said.

The American Red Cross was expected to be called to the scene to aid the residents. displaced by the fire.
