For the second consecutive year, the Oakley Union Elementary School District is partnering with the City of Oakley’s You, Me, We Oakley program to host Leer Para Crecer – Read to Grow – a literacy awareness event that encourages the promotion of literacy in the home.
This year’s event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gehringer Elementary School, has been expanded to include a literacy workshop for students in grades six through eight. Oakley district literacy coach Traci Tovani will host two workshops: for students in kindergarten through second grade (and their families) and third through fifth grade.
This year’s event will feature keynote speaker and Tracy resident Roxanne Ocampo, author of “Flight of the Quetzal Mama: How to Raise Latino Superstars and Get Them Into the Best Colleges.” The book describes the child-rearing philosophy she adopted for her children and the unique pathway to college for Latino-American students. Ocampo will discuss how parents can develop and nurture our future leaders.
Each family participating in the event will receive free books to enjoy at home plus informational packets about the importance of reading. Representatives from the Contra Costa Library will help participants apply for library cards and explore the library’s many services. Comcast will conduct a presentation offering computers and Internet services to those who qualify at a discount price. And La Clinica will provide the public with health services information.
The workshops will be followed by lunch and live entertainment. Lunch will be provided by local Mexican restaurants El Camino, Chapala, and Los Charros. Entertainment will consist of Hispanic theater, known as Teatro, and Ballet Folklorico. The Teatro will include two skits: one about the interactions between two bickering but loving Hispanic grandparents; the other a traditional Hispanic folkloric tale. And Oakley Mayor Kevin Romick will read a short story in Spanish.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Residents may register for Leer Para Crecer at any Oakley school site or by calling 925-382-6016. Registration will also be open on the morning of the event. Gehringer School is located at 100 Simoni Ranch Road in Oakley.
