PGE Wetlands

Students from East County enjoyed a recent visit to the Bay Point Regional Shoreline.

East County middle school students recently got the chance to hike through the Bay Point Regional Shoreline and learn about native habitat during the fifth annual Wonder of Wetlands program.

Sponsored by PG&E and its contractor, ERM (Environmental Resources Management), the program provided this learning opportunity for 47 l students at a wetlands area located in their backyard.

Students learned about the science behind important habitats through hands-on stations taught by Sacramento State Prof. Michelle Stevens and her 30 college students. Participants learned how birds have specially adapted beaks enabling them to eat certain insects or plants, how pH (the relative acidity or alkalinity of solution) and other factors affect water quality, and how wetlands act as a natural filter pulling out pollutants from local waterways.
