BRENTWOOD – Brentwood police identified a suspect in a shooting incident Sunday night at the Sycamore Garden Apartments complex.
Joshua Smith, 30, from Long Beach, was identified on Tuesday as the suspect who was wounded in the officer-involved shooting that sent he and his female hostage to a hospital with gunshot wounds, police said in a press release. Smith was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on an outstanding felony parole warrant and two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer.
Brentwood police responded to the apartment complex on the 160 block of Sycamore Ave. at about 9 p.m. Sunday after someone originally reported a hostage situation with a female being held against her will by a known male suspect armed with a gun, police said. The female hostage has not been identified..
As officers arrived, they heard gunshots. As they approached both the victim and suspect, the suspect fired back at the officers, missing them and hitting unoccupied cars in the parking lot. An officer fired back, hitting the suspect.
“I got home, went inside, and then kind of heard gunshots,” said Makenzie Berard, a nearby resident of the complex. “We didn’t know if it was gunshots, but after they kept going, we were like, Okay. Then I looked out my window and saw the cops running with their guns.”
Numerous residents mentioned that they’ve heard the couple involved in the incident arguing loudly in the parking lot before, but never did it come to this. Residents who lived closest to where the shooting took place said that they heard the couple arguing about one of them possibly cheating on the other.
Brentwood police are asking anyone with information on this incident to call Detective Agostinho at 925-809-7870.
