CHP also reported that the driver, a 25-year-old man, identified as Joseph John Martinez from Vallejo, was arrested under suspicion of felony DUI. Martinez was transported to John Muir Medical Center for treatment of injuries suffered in the accident, and he was arrested there. After being discharged from the hospital, the driver was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.

Martinez was travelling on Lone Tree Way in a black Nissan Sentra when he, according to CHP investigators, swerved into the oncoming lane. He turned back into the proper lane before he ran off the road and struck a utility pole in the shoulder of the westbound lane head-on, causing major damage to the vehicle. The deceased victim was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency responders. The accident was reported shortly after 5 a.m. just east of the intersection with Adams Lane. The Nissan was the only vehicle involved in the accident.

According to Brandon Correia, CHP public information officer, Martinez initially told responders a third party was driving and that party fled the scene on foot. Investigators initiated a search of the area, but determined that no other individual was involved.

CHP is continuing to investigate the incident and anyone who witnessed the accident, or the events leading up to the accident, is asked to contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez at (925) 646-4980.
