Christopher Addison Robert “Gonzo” Gonzales

Christopher was a thoroughly talented chef, a graduate of the Diablo Valley College (DVC) Culinary school where he earned certificates in Restaurant & Hotel Management, Baking & Pastry and Culinary Arts. He began his culinary journey at Boardwalk Grill in Discovery Bay, moving on to Shutters Brasserie in Brentwood. The next step on his journey was to return to his childhood home in Sacramento, where he lived out the rest of his life. He joined fellow DVC alum Brandon at Rio City Cafe. Other stops included Broderick’s and Ten22 in Old Sacramento. When Ten22 announced its imminent closure, Christopher was recruited within hours by Chef Q to join him in opening Echo & Rig. His last place of employment was Casablanca Cafe, where he was recruited by DVC alum Derek to assist in its opening. Christopher held many titles throughout his career, including Executive Chef and Sous Chef. His real value was as right-hand man to Executive Chefs who could deploy him where he was needed. During his career, he was honored to represent Rio City Cafe while working his culinary magic on the local TV show “Good Day Sacramento”. At Echo & Rig, he cooked for Vlade Divac, Patrick Willis, LeBron James, James Harden and Neil Patrick Harris, among others. Christopher was inspired by Anthony Bourdain, whose book “Kitchen Confidential” was his bible.

He would cook delicious home-cooked meals for his brother Alex and cousin Andria in the home they shared and enjoyed cooking for his entire family during the holidays.

Christopher had an infectious smile and laugh and those lucky enough to meet him him became his best friends for life. He had a kind word for everyone whom he met. After the end of his restaurant shift, he would often pass out food to homeless folks whom he encountered on his way home. He loved children and animals, especially his cousin Andria’s puppy Bella, whom he would often babysit.

He was an avid fan of the SF Giants, the SF 49ers and the Sacramento Kings. He loved traveling with his parents and enjoyed trips to Colorado and Saint Maarten. He will be remembered not only for his passion for his craft but most importantly, his kindness and generous nature towards all.

A celebration of Christopher’s Life will be held on Friday April 9, 2021 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church on 2800 Camino Diablo in Byron. Viewing and visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by mass at 2:00 PM led by Father Ron.
